Bridal Registry options in the San Juan Islands

Back in the old days before everybody had computers, bridal registries were pretty much limited to major department stores and the selection was limited to kitchenware and linens. It was (and still is) great fun to browse through these stores with a scanner (in the very old days we used a printed list and a pencil), on what basically amounts to a free shopping spree.

However, if meandering around stores picking out items in real time isn’t your favorite way to shop, you can do the whole thing on line. There are dozens of websites that will connect you to top retailers of all kinds. Just do a search for “bridal registry” and see what comes up.

Today’s couples have countless options. Major retail chains like Target, Macy’s and Pottery Barn have traditional registries, but do you know that you can also register for garden tools, camping gear, music, fine wine, travel and non-profit donations? The only limit is your imagination. If you’re bold and adventurous, consider calling your local art museum and asking if you can register for a membership, or call the cruise line you’re using for your honeymoon and ask if you can include cocktail or excursion coupons in your registry. I know a couple who went on a camping honeymoon and registered at Columbia Sportswear. They got everything they needed for their trip.

Businesses are in business to make money, and that includes artists, massage therapists and charities. If you tell them that you want to receive their products or services as a wedding gift, they’ll find a way to make it happen, even if they don’t have an “official” bridal registry. If you want your wedding guests to donate money to Greenpeace, I guarantee that if you call Greenpeace, they’ll figure out how to add themselves to your registry. Same for a signed print from your favorite painter, a massage for two, or tickets to a self-improvement seminar.

You would be amazed at what’s possible. Many of the shops in the San Juan Islands will be happy to register you for the items of you choice, so make some calls, use your imagination and don’t be afraid to think outside the box! © 2010 Terri Daniel
